Being good neighbors and good stewards of the land are important business and personal values in the California wine community. The state’s growers and vintners have been using sustainable winegrowing practices for decades, with educational efforts beginning as early as the late 1950’s. Today’s California wine community has made a strong commitment to sustainability and transparency, as evidenced through the self-assessment and certification programs that have emerged in the last decade.

California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA)

CSWA is a non-profit organization incorporated in 2003 by Wine Institute and the California Association of Winegrape Growers to promote environmental stewardship and social responsibility in the California wine community. CSWA administers Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing (CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE) and the Sustainable Winegrowing Program, a free, educational program for California growers and vintners.

Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing (CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE)

Introduced in 2010, CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE is a certification program that provides third-party verification that a winery or vineyard adopts and implements stringent sustainable winegrowing requirements based on 200+ best practices, and commits to continuous improvement in those areas. After meeting 58 vineyard and 37 winery prerequisite criteria, companies use self-assessment data to determine what areas need to be improved, focus their resources on practices that will make the most difference for their sustainability goals, and continually improve year after year to retain certification. Vineyards and wineries must also meet additional score requirements, measure and track metrics for water, energy, GHGs and nitrogen, and vineyards must comply with the restrictions on crop protection materials. As of January 2017, a new CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE wine logo is available for use on wine labels of CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE wineries using at least 85% or more grapes from certified vineyards and must be 100% from California.

Several of the state’s winegrowing regions and other organizations have sustainable and environmental programs, many of which provided the foundation for the statewide California Sustainable Winegrowing program and all of which play an important role in the ever-expanding tapestry of the California wine community’s efforts to produce high quality wine that is environmentally sound, economically feasible and socially equitable.

A self-assessment tool consisting of 227 best practices for California vineyards and wineries. California winegrape growers and vintners use the workbook to measure their level of sustainability and to learn how to increase it over time.
